Help your students think like mathematicians

Enrich your maths teaching. See maths in new ways.

Is this you?

What if… you could change the way your students see maths, and WITHOUT overhauling your teaching?

Brilliant time at Maths Teacher Circles discussing new problems and pedagogy, but more importantly just taking time out to have a play with maths in a collaborative context.”

– Carmen Brading, Primary Teacher

Introducing the global Circles Membership program

Join an energising and thoughtful teacher community – and get ready to see maths in new ways.

This is a professional learning program unlike anything else you’ll find.

You won’t receive a 17-step method or some strict process to follow. You won’t be told you need to make dramatic changes to have an impact. You won’t even hear that you need to be funnier, more charismatic or a superhero in order to be ‘good’.

Instead…

We start by assuming you’re already great (you have one of the MOST COMPLEX jobs, after all).

At our ongoing workshops, you’ll have time to explore, reflect on and share ideas with other teachers. You’ll step into students’ shoes and actually do maths (it’s messy, challenging and fun!). You’ll get practical, new ideas you can choose from to suit your teaching

As a Circles Member, you’ll also get access to a Private Library of resources, plus ongoing support.

In this immersive experience, you'll learn how you can help your students become more engaged, excited and FAR stronger in maths.

Hi, I’m Michaela Epstein.

After searching for ways to make professional learning more meaningful, in 2020 I founded Maths Teacher Circles.

By working closely for over a decade with primary and secondary teachers, school leaders, government, ed-tech start-ups and more, I was reminded time and again that education is so wonderfully complex. The most valuable thing we can do is invest in each other – not in some piece of research, tech tool or model.

Maths Teacher Circles exists so that teachers like you can share your expertise and uncover new mathematical ideas and teaching strategies (not cover the same old topics!) in a stimulating and empowering space for meaningful learning.

Over 1,000 primary and secondary teachers and school leaders globally have now come together through our program to share expertise and uncover new maths teaching ideas.

My aim is for our Circles Membership to be an exceptional experience that leaves you confident, curious and excited again about teaching maths. I hope to see you soon!

“I absolutely love how Michaela runs this! The balance she has between maths with teachers’ hats off and maths teachers’ hats on is perfect and beautiful and I’ve not seen anyone else do that as well as she does.”

– James Tanton, Mathematician &
Founder of Global Math Project

“The way Michaela has structured Maths Teacher Circles and her presentation style encourages people to engage in conversation online unlike any other workshop that I have been part of.”

– THOMAS MOORE, MATHS
EDUCATION CONSULTANT

Using Questions to Unlock Creativity

How might questioning enable learners to form new connections, take risks and open up mathematical possibilities?

At this online workshop in May, together we’ll explore how questions can be used to move beyond ‘instruction-following’ and into the realm of deep and creative mathematical thinking.

Using highly engaging and thought-provoking problems, you’ll examine strategies for question-posing and how to frame what you ask, in order to better understand and meaningfully support all learners.

You'll also explore strategies and tools for helping your students to become stronger and more confident mathematical thinkers.

Join Michaela Epstein (Maths Teacher Circles), and special guests, Aylie Davidson and David Butler. This is a one-time only session.

“I enjoyed meeting and working with other people. It was very collegiate. Some PDs you go to, you just sit together in your school groups. I want to build networks of people that I can email and call, see what they are doing for this and that.”

– SARAH C., SECONDARY MATHS TEACHER

“It’s really good to meet other people who are excited. You get energy and ideas, and just get to talk to them.”

– JO B., SECONDARY MATHS TEACHER

Frequently Asked Questions

In the week leading up to the session, we will email you with information about how to access and prepare for the session.

If you have registered for a session but have not received these emails, please check your junk/spam folders. If our emails just haven’t come through, please contact us.

Yes! We record the sessions so that you can go back and re-watch the best bits in your own time.

You will receive a recording within a week of when a session is held.

A Circles Membership is for you, if you:

    1. are after strategies and recommended resources to help students become better problem solvers and mathematical thinkers
    2. want dedicated time to focus and reflect on teaching practice
    3. are keen to build meaningful connections and join a like-minded community.

The Circles Membership is NOT for you if you would prefer to listen to a lecture, rather than engage in problem solving and interact with others.

We also don’t recommend our Circles Membership program if someone else is making the decision for you to attend. We want you to join us because you’re curious about maths and teaching. Opt-in attendance means you have the choice over how you are spending your time learning.

If you do want to get the full benefits of ongoing learning, we recommend a Circles Membership.

However, if you would like to register for the next upcoming session only, head to the checkout page.

There is no minimum required maths skills or knowledge that you need to have.

People who get the most out of sessions:

  1. Come ready to be challenged, and know they will not know everything
  2. Share their ideas, even when those ideas are half-formed or seem left-of-centre
  3. Ask questions.

Presenters carefully select tasks with a low floor and high ceiling – meaning these are tasks that will be widely accessible with plenty of room for extension and to be taken in different directions.

You will meet and collaborate with a wide range of teachers. This is the beauty of Maths Teacher Circles! Each person brings their own experiences and insights, resulting in fantastic discussions and learning opportunities.

Each session is practical, interactive and carefully designed so that you have meaningful opportunities to connect with others.

We also make the most of the online setting, and will introduce you to effective tools for collaborative problem solving and for making sense of mathematical ideas.

Yes! Our sessions are specially designed to allow you to choose from a selection of practical ideas that will suit your teaching.

Here’s a selection of what you might learn about:

  1. Low floor, high ceiling problem solving tasks that you can use with a wide range of students
  2. Questioning techniques
  3. Strategies for supporting students to tackle challenging tasks, organise their thinking, form conjectures, work independently and explain their ideas
  4. How to use new tools, such as maths manipulatives and thinking routines.
  5. New mathematical ideas and how concepts are connected

Yes! A Circles Membership can be used to count towards your Teacher Identified/Elective PD, as required by NESA.

After every online session you attend, you will receive a certificate recognising the professional learning hours you have done and listing alignment to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

A Circles Membership includes approximately 12.5 hours of professional learning over 12 months.

Yes! Unlike some professional learning that requires you to follow a program or process, our sessions are designed so that you can choose from a selection of practical ideas that will suit your school context and your teaching.

For example, you might get new ideas on questioning techniques, how to help students to explain their thinking or tools you can use to explain important concepts.

“People enjoy fantasy, and that is just what mathematics can provide” – Paul Lockhart, mathematician

We believe that maths can be intriguing, perplexing and fun – and that this is the case no matter your age or level of mathematical experience. In other words, students can enjoy coming to maths class, BECAUSE of maths not in spite of it!

At our sessions, you will explore problems and discuss strategies that can help your students to see maths differently and get excited about coming to your classes.

Many people have their registration paid for by their school or institution.

To help make it easier for you to get your registration funded by your school /institution, we made this editable letter so you can request funding.

Session registrations are open up until the day before the session.

With a Circles Membership, you will be automatically registered for all sessions within the 12 months of your membership.

That’s not a problem. Within a week of the session, you will receive a recording AND all session resources so that you can catch up on it in your own time.

You will also still be able to request a certificate recognising the professional learning hours you have done.

Yes! In addition to the online sessions, we also offer face-to-face options.

We have extensive consulting experience with primary and secondary teachers. Our team is available to run in-school workshops based on the needs and priorities of school teams.
